Page 1: Overview

Resident EvilWhen Resident Evil 1 was first released way back in 1996, it became an instant cult and mainstream hit. Resident Evil is one of the best selling games ever to grace the PlayStation console, and with good reason.

Resi 1 was the first ever game to be dubbed a 'Survival Horror', a genre which, as the name would suggest, involves the players struggling to survive through a horrific quest or adventure.

So what is Resident Evil all about? Well, I will start with this: the main aim in Resident Evil is to excape from a mansion. Sounds easy, right? Wrong... very, very wrong, in fact. For starters, the front door is guarded by super strong zombie dogs, which could rip the player to shreds in seconds. The next problem? A lot of the doors are locked, meaning that you will have to explore every inch of the sprawling game world to find everything you need. Oh, and just to help you along a bit, the mansion is infested with zombies.

Herein lies the main gameplay mechanics of Resident Evil: explore, find items, use the items where they are needed, and progress through, all the while surviving hordes of undead with a limited amount of ammunition and health.

Aside from the groundbreaking dynamics of the game itself, the way the game is actually presented is also something to both admire and loathe. Resident Evil uses a fixed perspective - a 2d rendering with a 3d character moving over it. This gave the game a very creepy atmosphere, as developers could find interesting angles in rooms to obscure your vision.

Anyway, them's the basics. On the next few pages I will be taking a more in depth look at Resident Evil, and as usual I will present it with a rating out of 10.
